How do I Know if I am one of the 88% of Americans With Insulin Resistance?

becomemybestme

When it comes to prevention of  blood sugar issues, early detection is key. Identifying a potential problem early on can help you avoid it becoming a full-blown chronic disease.

For more information on insulin resistance and what it is read "Insulin Resistance. What is it? What Can I Do to Prevent or Reverse It?" My earlier blog on this topic.

Reasons to request a fasting insulin test. Most healthcare providers advise an annual screening for chronic conditions like hyperlipidemia, heart disease, and diabetes. Unfortunately, identifying potential blood sugar issues early, when they are easily treatable or reversible, is not always possible. Even if your fasting glucose test results are good or your HbA1c (two common blood sugar tests) is normal, you might still be in the early stages of developing a blood sugar issue. However, the fasting insulin test can detect this. Working as a certified medical assistant in a family practice clinic, I often see people unaware of these conditions until they become significant problems, which are much more difficult to treat or reverse.

What are insulin reference ranges? Ideally fasting insulin should be well below 20 UIU/ML. Optimum levels are 2-6. Studies show 7  and above is a higher risk. 30 is the official diagnosis criteria of insulin resistance. The higher your number the more likelihood of insulin resistance.

Some common symptoms of insulin resistance are:

weight gain, especially belly fat

excessive hunger especially craving carbohydrates and thirst

fatigue

moodiness

weakness

chronic inflammation

frequent Headaches

acne

low testosterone

ED

PCOS

female infertility

skin tags
