Micronutrients, What are They?

ree

Micronutrients refers to the vitamins and minerals in foods we eat.  Opposed to macronutrients which are the bigger nutrients of food such as protein, carbohydrates, and fats. micronutrients are all of the other components that make up foods. Your body generally needs less of these nutrients which is why they are called  Macro (small)  nutrients. Adequate intake of all micronutrients is needed for optimal overall health since each vitamin and mineral plays a specific role in body functions.  To get adequate amounts of micronutrients you need to eat a well balanced diet.  Macronutrients play a vital role in energy, mood, metabolism, growth,  immune system,  really, every aspect of your health.  Getting too much (toxicity) or too little (deficiency) of a vitamin or mineral can lead to negative side effects.

Studies indicate that adequate consumption of micronutrients significantly benefits the following:

mood stability helping with anxiety and depression

improving cognitive function

aids in weight loss

boosts energy levels

promotes better sleep
